What are your visiting hours?

This is your loved one's new home. You may visit anytime, just as you would have before, being respectful of the other residents. Your mother may enjoy coming home with you for a special occasion. You can even hold a party or special celebration for your mom at Somerford and invite all of her family and friends. Everyone’s welcome! back to top

Do you offer Respite Care?

Yes. Many of our residents started with respite care at Somerford to acclimate to an assisted living environment before making the decision to move in permanently. Respite stays can help make the transition from home to assisted living smoother. Many caregivers use Somerford’s respite program to care for their loved one when they cannot due to a medical situation, travel, or they simply need a break. Respite stays are dependent on room availability. back to top

What is your caregiver to resident ratio?

Our caregiver to resident ratio varies depending on the number of residents living in a home, the level of care each of those residents requires, and the time of day. At Somerford House and Somerford Place, we consistently meet or exceed industry standards for staffing ratios. Our ratios are higher in Somerford Place than in Somerford House due to the increased needs of people with dementia. back to top

Do you serve three meals each day?

Yes, and we provide snacks in between each meal and at bedtime. But, please remember Somerford is their home, not an institution! The resident’s individual habits do not need to change. For instance, if your mother has never been a breakfast person and she enjoys sleeping in until 10 a.m. each morning, she can continue to do that here at Somerford. back to top

How do you keep residents stimulated and busy?

Somerford team members understand that each resident is an individual with unique interests, experiences and personalities. That is why we ask residents and family members to complete a lengthy Personal Profile which provides us insight into their personality, likes and dislikes, hobbies and interests. Somerford’s Getting To Know You™ program is one of the ways we meet each resident’s individual interests. In your father’s case, we would want to know what his interests were before, whether he preferred group involvement or simply to have quiet time. We would not force him to go into the community center to participate in a large group activity if that were not his previous pattern. Instead, our team members would find an activity pleasing to your dad. Please ask us more about the Getting To Know You™ program. back to top

Can the residents go outside whenever they want to?

Residents of Somerford House may come and go as they please. Residents of Somerford Place have secured courtyards and a large backyard to enjoy whenever they please. The beautiful gardens and walking paths encourage residents to enjoy the outdoors. The electronic doors to the backyard are locked during inclement weather and after dark for the resident’s protection. back to top

Do you have a hospice waiver?

Yes. Most of us hope to be able to die at home and not in a hospital or a nursing home. We have a hospice waiver which allows residents and their families to experience Somerford care and hospitality during the last few months of the resident’s life. There are some residents who are not appropriate for hospice services. Others develop serious medical complications that require a skilled nursing home level of care. In those cases, Somerford staff will assist the family in finding the best solution and making the necessary move to a higher level of care. back to top

Is the rent tax deductible?
